How we selected
We selected for Irish asking-price availability, battery size and remaining warranty, DC connector usefulness, daily range fit, service/recall evidence and total finance cost. A listing price is not a valuation.
Shortlist and current price context
| Used route | Irish asking-price context | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Nissan Leaf 40 kWh (2018–2021) | Often about €10,000–€15,000 | CHAdeMO rapid charging is becoming less convenient; battery condition matters. |
| Hyundai Ioniq Electric 38 kWh (2020–2022) | Often in the low-to-mid teens | Efficient, but modest battery and DC speed make repeated long trips slower. |
| Kia e-Niro 64 kWh (2019–2021) | Examples can sit around €15,000–€20,000 | Strong family package; verify warranty, history and actual trim. |
| Hyundai Kona Electric 64 kWh (2019–2021) | Examples can sit around €17,000–€20,000 | Useful battery; rear space is tighter than e-Niro. |
| Renault Zoe ZE50 (2020–2022) | Often below €20,000 | Confirm whether the exact car has DC charging and whether the battery is owned. |
The bands above are a 31 July 2026 market snapshot, not promised transaction prices. They are cross-checked against the current Irish model-by-model snapshot published by Odo.ie; confirm live stock on the day you buy.
What to check before choosing
- Ask for battery state-of-health evidence, not just the dashboard range estimate.
- Check the registration/VIN for outstanding recalls and confirm warranty start date in writing.
- Test AC and DC charging using the cables and networks you expect to use.
- Price tyres, finance interest and insurance alongside the sticker price.
Who should buy which?
For mostly local driving, the Leaf, Ioniq or Zoe can minimise purchase cost. For regular inter-urban family travel, a sound 64 kWh Kona or e-Niro is usually the more flexible shortlist. None is automatically “best”: charging access and verified battery condition decide the order.
